It is important to note that once the original fibreglass laminate is damaged, any repairs to the original are considered as secondary bonds. With this in mind, the materials used to repair the laminate should be as good as what the laminate was constructed with. This is particularly important for resin choice. For example, if the laminate was constructed with an Epoxy Resin it should be repaired with an Epoxy Resin.

  3. Flat Roof Systems Compared

There are many varied flat roof systems available on the market. In this article we compare some of these and identify materials and processes which are involved with each application.

Examined and compared are the following flat roof systems: Concrete, Asphalt, Felt, EDPM and Fibreglass/ GRP.

    Concrete

One of the main advantages with concrete roofing is that it is incredibly strong. Unlike some of its counterparts, it can withstand highly extreme weather conditions. Issues such as wind uplift do not impact concrete flat roofs, and they also have extremely long lifespans.

The obvious downside is the extreme weight of the product. The structure must be able to support the strain of a concrete roof. Concrete roofs also require a sealant to repel water. This sealant is often made from Asphalt felt.

    INTRODUCTION

Proper application of gelcoat is critical to producing cosmetically appealing and durable parts. Improperly applied gelcoat increases the cost of the part. The amount of additional cost incurred depends on the number of rejected parts as well as the effort required to rework the parts. Making the investment of properly applying the gelcoat can pay big dividends by reducing rework and scrap. Proper gelcoat application includes material preparation, equipment calibration, use of trained spray operators and appropriate spray methods.

    OVERVIEW

A conventional gelcoat is applied with spray equipment. Brushing of gelcoats is not recommended. The following information assumes that the proper gelcoat spray equipment has been

There are many types of flat roofing systems, each using different materials and each requiring different methods of repair. In order to approach any repair successfully, it is important to first identify which system you will be carrying out the repair of.

Some common flat roofing systems are:

    • Concrete: This consists of a solid slab of concrete which caps the top of a structure or building
    • Asphalt: This is a bitumen based type of roofing product which has a stone, grey like appearance
    • Felt roofing: This is a more traditional and common method of roofing. Common on old wooden shed structures. The surface finish has a gritty, rough texture like sandpaper. This protective barrier is constructed of layers of bitumen.
