To delve a little more into each of these success factors we can examine each component a little more closely.

Reliability

Boat building and repairs was one of the primary usages for fibreglass. Its durability was tested on the harsh conditions of the sea. Its reputation in boat building has also been transferred to the fibreglass roofing industry.

One all materials have been applied to the recommended guidelines, a fibreglass flat roof will last in excess of 20 years. Its seamless finish is paramount to its success as a watertight, robust method of flat roofing.

Ease of use

Fibreglass roofing is a process consisting of 3 core steps – Application of roof trims, Lamination and Topcoat application.

The application of roofing trims is the first stage to attend to once all OSB3 Boarding has been screwed down. Once the correct trims have been selected, silicone is applied and the trims are nailed down using galvanised nails as these will not rust.

Secondly, the lamination phase takes place. The lamination phase consists of a catalysed resin and a fibreglass material. In the case of a fibreglass flat roof build, chopped strand matting (csm) is most suitable. Generally 450g matting is sufficient for a standard fibreglass roof build. In some cases however, it will be necessary to use 600g or 900g (or layers of 900g) if the roof is to be used as a walkway or balcony.

Once cured, a fibreglass roof will be completely tack free. Its smooth flat appearance will ensure the roof remains easy to clean and maintain. If needed the roof can be easily washed down with a hose and cleaned with a brush.
