Polyester Resin Uses

Polyester Resin uses are broad and varied depending on the nature of the task at hand. Just like every project has its own requirements and demands, the same applies to each type of Polyester Resin.

Polyester Resin is generally supplied pre-accelerated. However, a catalyst is supplied to start the curing process. Catalyst is mixed at 2% at room temperature levels.

Polyester Resin is a speciality of FibreGlassDirect, we have supplied and used Polyester Resin for more than 60 years, sourcing from the best manufacturers across the world. We have found it to be hard wearing, cost-effective and suitable to meet the requirements of most of our fibreglass projects. Of course, there are times when you may need another type of resin such as Epoxy – which you can read more about on our website.

Uses of Polyester Resin

Boat Building and Repairs

The origins of Polyester Resin began in the boat building industry. It’s durability and strength make it the perfect base for the harsh conditions of marine exploration. The majority of dinghies, yachts and workboats are manufactured from Polyester Resin. For this type of use, we recommend our Lloyd’s Approved or Isophthalic Polyester Resins.

Flat Roofing

The biggest growth for Polyester Resin in recent years has come from the Flat Roofing industry. Flat roofing is seamless, tough and at the same time, easy to clean and maintain. The Polyester Resin is worked into the chopped strand matting which lays on top of wooden boards. This gives the roof its hardened layer of reinforcement. The Flex Roofing or Lloyd’s Approved Polyester Resin is recommended for roofing.

Pond Building

Concrete ponds are suitable for lining with fibreglass. Polyester resin, as with other fibreglass builds is worked into the layer of chopped strand matting to create the initial reinforcement. With pond lining, two layers of chopped strand matting are required. This means that double the amount of polyester resin will also be required. This layering up of resin and matting alongside the final topcoat layer ensures the pond remains leak free.

Arts and Crafts

The Water Clear Casting Polyester Resin is perfect for making decorative objects such as Costume Jewellery, Paperweights, Encapsulations (of Flowers, Coins or Biological Specimens). It can also be used for creating stylish table tops.

Surf Boards

Fibreglass surfboards have been around for more than 50 years. Polyester Resin is used in surfboards which are made from an inner material of polyurethane and subsequently wrapped in a fibreglass cloth. The Polyester Resin is worked into the fibreglass cloth which hardens and gives the board its protection and rigid structure.

Custom Moulding

As the same suggests, fibreglass custom moulding is bespoke to the requirements of the product being created. Therefore, a number of Polyester Resins can be used. Popular moulding resins would be Low-Cost General Purpose Resin and Lloyd’s Approved Resin.
